Tracking time is a staple at most law firms, and ACW Law was due for an infrastructure upgrade. After decades of manually tracking time on a spreadsheet, the company aimed to transition from pen and paper to something fresher and easier.
The catalyst for such an upgrade wasn’t to meticulously track attorneys’ time; rather, the company added digital time tracking to ensure the firm’s employees were taking mandated breaks.
“We wanted to make sure employees were taking time off and giving themselves that little bit of reprieve needed to finish the day strongly,” said Jane Miller, office manager, ACW Law. “Oftentimes, employees would skip lunch or eat their lunches at their desks, and we wanted them to stop for a few minutes to allow themselves an opportunity to refresh their minds.”
After conducting some research, the firm trialed a small handful of time tracking apps. After cycling through each option, the company agreed that OnTheClock best aligned with their interests and implemented the cloud-based time tracking software in February 2024.
“We wanted something that was digital, more of a 21st Century solution, that kept track of hours for the day, week, month, etc.,” said Miller. “We always agreed it would be so much better if we simply had a report we could print out and share with our payroll processor. Now, with OnTheClock, we can do just that.”
The software has proven beneficial for ACW Law, helping them keep track of employees’ comings and goings as well as ensuring they’re taking a few minutes off the clock each and every day.
“We’re able to outsource payroll quicker and easier, which has been great for our in-house accountant,” said Miller. “Our staff can see if their assistants are present, who’s on break, etc. And, I’m happy to report our employees are now taking breaks – and we’re already seeing positive results. One of the legal assistants' husbands came in, and they had lunch together. It's great that she knows she has the ability to clock out and enjoy that meal with her significant other.”
